Iberostar Daiquiri Cayo Guillermo: Wow what a place! The resort and general area

They really don't do a rum punch! But the room we had a superior which was comfortable and very nice. No bath, didn't miss that as we had a great walk in shower. Beds were nice and comfortable the air con was integrated into the wall not a separate unit- it worked well. There were few insects that were annoying. I am not sure where I stand on the fogging to kill them off. Remember this is the cayos and it is uninhabited - no town and you are in the heart of mangrove where if they did not fog it might be brutal.
I was fishing and found the devastation of Irma telling on the fish life.
The staff were amazing and very friendly, in some ways they made the trip more special. I loved fishing from the pier and the night time shows were of a high standard. From memory the settings of the theatre of the Melia next door was slightly better.
Food was ok, but the mexican restaurant was disappointing. The red wine atrocious. When you get over these small things quickly because there are 20 that arrive to the next few minutes...if it is a quick walk to the pier and jump in the crystal clear and inviting water to a cuban band in the lobby playing for you while you ponder what to drink...Cuba is going to clean up the tourism in the Caribbean, watch out other islands. And also the pool and area is very family friendly and equally good for adults. The swim up bar is in the shade is the only negative and really that didn't affect it. I don't think you will regret coming here so long as the price is not too high for you. This resort did feel better than a 3 star in Antigua for example.
For reference we went mid April just after the easter bookings it was busy and though annoyingly people were reserving sunbeds we managed to get over that as there was space by the pool. STOP RESERVING SUNBEDS!
There were quite a few kite boarders staying and surfing this weeks strong winds which (the winds) did mess up my fishing to a degree. I hope to return and fish some more..

Not the cheapest option but certainly lives up to the expectations which is not often the case in the caribbean!
This resort is suitable also for weddings as much as it is suited to couples.

Want to scuba?
There are loads and hundreds of incredible diving spots a mile or less off the hotel.
One dive that comes to mind descends huge undersea boulders and canals
encrusted with endless tubes and sponges. Numerous tunnels and doorways descend to a vast tarpon-fish feeding ground. Very unique.

Melia Cayo Guillermo: Good Value and Enjoyable Holiday at the Melia Cayo Guillermo

Its a very nice beach and the nature is mostly unspoilt* The cays here are remote (staff get bussed in from the closest towns 1 hour away!) due to the remoteness and the National Park and so the nature around is very undisturbed by a lack of mass human development (though tourism must impact). If you take the $5 bus ride you will see the nature and feel the remoteness a feature of the holiday for me. The activities are numerous and I would like to scuba dive next time and more fishing and a catamaran cruise.

General
The resort is pleasant to walk around and the internet worked though only at the reception area ($1.5) by purchasing a card.

Entertainment
Almost forgot to mention this - it was very very good and different from other caribbean islands I have been to. It was much more artful like ballet and very creative. For example they came by the reception and just performed right there. It made you feel special guests oddly.

The Staff
On balance EXCELLENT.
Not always smiling as much as you would like but understand (probably due to shift lengths and low wages) and you need to get that the british thank you for everything is OTT for them. I dont normally tip as I dont agree with it. HERE I DO TIP - it felt right and appropriate earning $15 per month was a rumour.

The Pool
The (only) pool lining is a weird kind of rubber lining like you would get on a high end garden pool and the bottom is creased. But it means the sides are much better than tiles! And the floor doesn't have slippery surface so I found the pool ok. It was cloudy water if I am being critical and maybe this was chlorine.

Dining
Eating at the buffet for breakfast lunch and dinner was perfectly acceptable and the wines drinkable. A decent range of foods. You should try the other restaurants which I really liked - the international one and the italian both surprised us in the quality of service and feeling. The international one has nice views and feels apart from the resort (it is slightly).

When you keep an open mind and consider what you get for your money then it feels like a great value resort that is comfortable and capable. At times CUBA happens and you might have a power outage or you catch your foot on a raised floorboard on the pier or you don't get your mini bar refilled (not many hotels do that at all! It's FREE here..)

I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS RESORT TO MOST PEOPLE

*fogging to kill off the mosquitos seems to be often and it seems to be killing more than just mosquitos.

The resort itself is well appointed with lifts and even a Funicular. You wouldn't really leave the resort by foot it's not that kind of place. There is a daily ferry that goes over to a beautiful island called PALOMINO. This is a highlight as it feels like you are escaping a resort that feels hard to otherwise escape. It's not that this place is at all unpleasant but it just takes a mindset to accept it. Good pools and bars and things maybe not the most fun place depends on you. The entertainment is also pretty good with a big dancing floor area. I would stay again if only because there isn't a massive choice in the region. It's well located to discover El Yunque National Park.

If not get it while on holiday in Grenada and further your diving. See this massive piece of steel on the Caribbean Sea floor. Diving is amazing yes. A difficult dive due to the depth and scale of the wreck, added to the fact that current can exist conservation of air is a challenge. Nitrox is much better allowing a better time at the depths necessary for this wreck, there isn't a reef to chill out and start to off gas on either.

It's lush surrounding of palm trees and fresh flowers gives an amazing and fantastic fragrance throughout the atmosphere. The beach view rooms with large balcony and dining area is a major plus to this resort. The level of service by the staff is overwhelming and a sense of friendliness and togetherness with staff and guest gets a full rating. The only downfall to this resort was the size of the beach. It was quite small in size (space) and this resulted in limited spaces for beach chairs and a possible crowding if everyone decides to head there at once. Overall, it is an amazing resort to visit to get that much needed relaxation.

They are the only people that we would trust to teach our teenager, who had a great time and is now fully certified. The kit is always in good condition, the boat is never too full - they limit the number of divers to way below the boat's capacity and the number of staff as I think they'd rather give people a great experience than try and turn a bigger profit! The dive sites are very varied and the dive leaders are experienced, professional, courteous and really nice people to be around. Coming here is always a very happy experience for us.

After our first visit in 2010 and then again this year (2011), we can see that there have been many improvements in all areas!
The accommodations were wonderful, the service from all of the staff was excellent, all of the workers were very courteous, polite and willing to do anything to make you feel welcomed. One on the biggest changes that we saw was the quality of the food that was served. WOW....After the first meal...we knew immediately there must be a new Chef in the building!!!
Every meal was absolutely wonderful.

We THANK ALLL OF YOU for the wonderful week of FUN & SUN!!!
We would highly recommend this resort to everyone. After traveling spending time on the beaches of Hawaii, Jamaica, Florida & many others....none can compete with the accommodations of the Mayan Princess and the BEAUTIFUL BEACHES on the West Bay of Roatan.

THANKS AGAIN and we hope to see you again next September.

Although many people like this hotel very much, it should be noted that it is a very bare-bones place. The rooms have no amenities, not even a plug to put a razor in in the bathroom, shower heads that go from cold to hot and back in the twinkling of an eye, no Kleenex, no hairdryers, very hard beds and slippery tile floors. The breakfasts are good (and the breakfast ladies very sweet and helpful), but the rest of the food is mediocre at best with very little choice. We found two better restaurants in Roseau: Le Bistrot and Old Stone café. The hotel is perched on the edge of a busy two-lane road that is noisy at night. It is nearly impossible to walk along the road since it is very narrow and the traffic comes at you from what seems to us the wrong side of the street (as in England). The best snorkeling is at a place called Champagne Bubbles, which is a ten-fifteen minute cab ride from the hotel. Once you get there you have to walk a long way over small, volcanic boulders to get to the entry to the water. The going is rough. Also, since it is the best snorkeling in the area it gets overrun with people from the cruise ships who don't know what they're doing. The island boasts many beautiful waterfalls, but only a few of them are fairly easily reached from the Roseau area. Many are long cab rides away.

In short, I would recommend this hotel only for serious divers who are not concerned with niceties.

You are not here to enjoy a 5 star beachside resort and spa experience. You are a nature lover and this resort will put you into the heart of that. This resort needs to be a value proposition and for you only you can decide that.

But there are enough negative reviews to give weight that this resort suffers like almost every single Caribbean Resort ! The service compared to US and Canada expectations when it comes to the restaurant and food. It's an all too common complaint in the Caribbean. On top of this or a part of this there appear to be some rooms that need some attention. And again some room details that do affect people's holidays - get it right - mould on the curtains really is easy to fix.

We wouldn't recomend staying until the owners decide to bring it back to the original ethos. Too often in the Caribbean it is an attitude of we wont improve until more people come - sadly that is the death knell.

The Club Med all too often next door is cited as a better option.

Timeless or time is up ? In need of some serious renovation and refurb by all accounts here - but as with most places in the Caribbean its the vibe and charm that capture your heart and not the resorts themselves at times. Still you need to paying the right money and this one is too expensive for mediocrity.

There are normally more negative reviews from those that are really hard to please but this resort seems either not to attract this kind of visitor or they simply charm them. I think the clarity of their website helps - you will know what your getting into here no tv ! for example. It's not for everyone. But it seems to be very popular and I think I would short list it for a trip to the Bahamas especially to go diving - though the Bahamas is perhaps best dived seriously from a liveaboard.

December 2014 I was staying with some friends.

The Superfast recently got new management and changed its schedule. Now the cruises leave Miami in the evening, arriving in Bimini around 9 p.m., then leaving two days later. This gives you a full day on the island and the chance to see and do (almost) everything it has to offer.

Don't expect a full service cruise, as this isn't Carnival or Norwegian etc. The Superfast and the resort were a great combination for a short and inexpensive weekend getaway.

We had been planning to do this trip for a while and we finally went online and made our reservations about a month beforehand. Very easy. We paid $40 extra each to stay in the 2 bedroom villa which turned out to be a good choice (see below). A few days later I see on Facebook that they are running a Black Friday deal that was significantly cheaper than what we paid for. However, I emailed the people at RW Bimini and received a a call 45 minutes later that they had credited my card with the difference. So kudos to them for great customer service even before the trip started.

Boarding begins at 3 p.m. for the 6 p.m. departure. It supposedly closes at 5 p.m. We arrived at Port Miami at 2:50 p.m., parked our car five minutes away in the garage ($20 a night). It was a little crowded when we walked into the terminal but they have a ton of employees checking in the guests and immediately we were asked if we were staying on the ship or in the villa. Note that if you are staying the villa you are escorted to a "VIP" line which is much shorter than if you have a cabin on the ship. They give you your villa keys in Miami so you can just go straight to your room when you get to Bimini. Then you go through the metal detector. The whole process took about 15 mins tops.

Once you board the ship there are a bunch of smiling and friendly employees and island music to get you in the mood for vacation. All the bars/ restaurants are open so you can immediately start eating and drinking. The Casino doesn't open until you go further offshore. If you are staying in a villa and have only a small carry-on do not bother checking your bag – they will keep it behind the concierge desk for you at no charge and you pick it up when you get off. That was helpful. They offer "snacks" consisting of hamburgers, hot dogs and fries when you first get on and many people believe this is the included meal. However, one the ship begins to move there is a great, FREE, buffet with fish, chicken, salad and dessert on the top deck. Most people just didn't know about it, so definitely don't stuff yourself with "snacks" or you will be disappointed.

The muster drill took a little longer than expected because one passenger to was missing, but around 6:30 p.m. the ship began to move and the normal cruise experience resumed. We went up to the top deck for the free dinner, watched a basketball game and played at the casino. The minimums are lower on the ship than on the resort, so we did most of our gambling there. Although the website advertises a Sportsbook, it recently closed, but there is one on the island. There was also Bingo and a live band, but we didn't take advantage of that.

We arrived in Bimini around 9:30 p.m. and breezed through customs. The new pier that opened a few months ago means that you don't have to deal with the offshore tenders and you walk right onto trams that take you anywhere in the resort. Note that if you are staying in a villa there are private golf carts that drive you right to your room. The whole process was a little confusing so don't be afraid to ask one of the many employees to clarify which golf cart/ tram you are supposed to get on.

Our room was located on the third floor overlooking the construction of the new Hilton Hotel, but noise was not an issue. The 2 bedroom villas are huge and can sleep 6-8 people. They come with full kitchens, a living room etc. There is also free and fast wifi throughout the resort which comes in handy for keeping in touch with friends/ family in the states.

You will have one full day on the island. The resort is very safe. I went running in the morning, tons of employees around greeting you with a smile. There were also shuttles to pick you up but I elected for the exercise. Rented a golf cart from Sue and Joys for $85, which seemed like the uniform price for a 24 hour rental. You can just return it the next morning before you get on the ship. Remember to drive on the left. Sue and Joys also has basic provisions such as water, soda and sunscreen.

Went into Alice Town (10 min golf cart or tram ride) and had lunch at C.J.'s Deli, great cracked conch overlooking the beautiful, Radio Beach. Beach has free chaises provided by the locals. Definitely worth a trip. Also went to Sherry's Beach Bar for some drinks. There are a few more restaurants, a liquor store (Bahamian rum/ alternative to expensive drinks on the resort ) and a straw market in town. Looked like the resort tram frequently ran back and forth to the resort.

Back on the property, the best pool by far was the Infinity Pool. Overlooks the Atlantic and has a bar on-site. Great place to watch the sunset. Pools were a bit cold, but an employee said that they had plans to put in heaters. The Marina pool is also nice and has a swim up bar, which was closed for some reason. Ate dinner at RW Hemingways Restaurant in the Casino which has a seating area. High prices but the food is fantastic, especially the Conch Chowder.

Nice casino, the minimums are a little high but they have all of the games and slots. We signed up for the RW Rewards program on the ship which gets you $20 in free play at the slots. Sportsbook is also there. Casino staff is VERY professional. We also went to the Sabor pool party across the street for a bit, but it was not very crowded. Great party complete with music and firedancers, but just not many people around. This is actually a good thing about the resort, there were always other visitors around but it was never overwhelming. Even on the ship, it never seemed like a ton of people were around.

Left Bimini on Saturday morning. We were initially confused about how to get to the pier since it was far, but as soon as we got out to the main resort road a bus pulled up asking if we had to go to the ship. They bring you to the reservations office first to get your boarding card, but if you book a roundtrip cruise, SAVE YOUR BOARDING CARD. You can stay on the shuttle, avoid the check-in lines and walk right onto the boat in two minutes time.

The trip back was quick and still fun. The free breakfast onboard consists of eggs, bacon, sausage hash browns, pancakes, fruit and yogurt. You can go back and get as much as you want, but it closes between 10 and 10:30 a.m. Exceeded expectations just as the free dinner had. Casino was open but we just went out to one of the lounge chairs on the top deck and slept while overlooking the Atlantic. You can get towels to lie down on from the reception desk. They have a welcome back party on the top deck to keep the vacation/ party going and were just as enthusiastic as they were on the way there. We were in Miami in no time.

Took about 45 minutes to get off the ship but that's because customs takes a while.

Great service on the ship and on the resort. There were a few employees who really went above and beyond for us: Valerie at Port Miami check-in, Glenn at the Superfast Club 360 Bar, Harold the cruise director, Kurt at the Aqua Bar and Bernadette at the Bimini casino. Outstanding service and they all looked like they enjoyed their jobs. The Bahamian people are some of the nicest people on earth and interacting with them was a pleasure.

Overall, a great trip that exceeded expectations. RW Bimini is really working hard to make this a destination resort and when the Hilton Hotel opens in 2015, the resort should be even better. Can't wait for another quick trip to Bimini in the near future.

There are a few rocks that can hurt toes if like me (you are an idiot mostly and charge around ) on the right hand side entry (the beach entry is split). You may like the GAP but for me its not the best part of Barbados, this resort is pretty much at one end of the St Lawrence Gap. I didn't have frosted windows or blinds in the shower or bathroom - thats more an issue for other people though ;) having to see me naked.
The service throughout was excellent, and throughout the furniture was comfortable. The caribbean is becoming left behind in terms of grandeur at times but here you may feel this is quite a compact comfortable stay.
I didn't find the watersports easy to get into the weather was not on my side for the hobby cats. And yet there was not enough waves for surfing here.

I marked the location down a bit since I am not a massive fan of the gap ! And the hasslers do take no for an answer but hey do spoil a single males (my perspective) experience somewhat. Th elocation as far as Barbados is concerned is great for anything in the south. It has a very nice house beach but is somewhat let down by the rocks forcing you to enter left and right - its really no bother tbh. Its lovely water and is a lot of fun. I didnt feel that I spent enough time enjoying the resorts facilities and water sports as I went out exploring the island.
The room was a real plus point - great spacious clean and modern. I didn't get a full ocean facing one but me being me probably didnt pay for one either. There is a swim up bar and the pools are big enough to dip in but can get a bit busy if the resort is busy. The service was excellent. i cant comment on the food as I found it a bit pricey for me but the menu looked good. The Gap in general to eat in is pricey. Even resorts like the crance looked to have a cheaper menu.
I would recommend this resort to stay in for a week. A bit more than that and the general space might make you feel a little cramped. 10 days would be fine if you get out and around like you should in Barbados.

I think in a perfect world bigger wash up facility is the only thing I can think of so far. Lobsters, an eel, shrimp, trigger fish, big angels, and on and on. Really enjoyed the company, my fellow divers attracted to the best shop on the Riviera Maya according to Trip Advisor. Thats how I started in diving and so warmed to this original style of diving for me. Based in falmouth I would say is no better or worse for topography on the actual diving quality and you just have to accept that topography isn't all that. You will find good schools of fish despite the toursit best efforts to eat them all. The waters here in the south seem to be a bit calmer if only because the dive sites are a bit closer perhaps. We did Pillars and Blacks among other sites and I have never ever seen so many lobster on a single dive in my life. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending you dive with Don and Xtreme.

Indigo Divers welcomed me onto their boat from Jolly Harbour dock. I had my own equipment just needed weights. Got a full and detailed briefing of the boat and entry methods employed and also getting back on as Antigua can get choppy. I also liked the fact the boat captain stays on board. This is a great safety feature and I liked this fact though its difficult to argue that someone will run off with the boat otherwise - still it helps and allows you to be picked up if need be.
I felt very comfortable with shade good refreshment and space on board the well maintained dive boat. If there was a negative it was just the fact that there was no shop to wash the gear down though you can wash it down in the Crows Nest facility. You can't have everything AND black tip reef sharks and I would recommend Indigo Divers fully.

We were travelling with our just turned 1 year old. The animation courtesy of the infamous Fenton and co a lot of fun. I think the week we were there the resort was at 60% capacity and this helped us to really appreciate the location. Had it been at 100% then the pool would have felt small with not enough beds to go around. The room was comfortable and we were poolside. I really could have hit the beach with a stone and this is the real magic of this resort its proximity to one of the best beaches I have ever been on. I took advantage of the hobbie cat and windsurfer that were included as part of our all inclusive package it was a nice area all round. Taxis to get anywhere were expensive and the all inclusive option was the best value for money as people regretting not doing that found out. We had an awesome 2 weeks and felt really sad to leave what we felt had become friends in some ways. We will return to Antigua for sure.
The evening entertainment was as to be expected and a little tame for us but the fire dancers were really top notch. The top of the world hosted a dance evening we had to miss unfortunately. I would say the resort is family friendly and would very much recommend it.
If you are planning on diving then try and arrange for a shop that will pick you up so the taxi doesn't make it an expensive dive. Jolly harbour is the best bet for getting a dive.
We also missed the Shirley Heights gig it seemed to darn expensive for what it was.

I can't review a regular day as there was next to no current and this drift dive normally tanks it along apparently. So we got to slow down (and Alvin dived nice n slow like I like it) and it was good - no end of bristle worms and some larger species like snappers but nothing really big. A bit of a complaint round the oceans these days. It took me a long time to get just two dives done getting back to my resort at 4pm.

Pinnacles are cool as they are rising sea mounts, these are not one but 4 and you can spiral and corkscrew around and navigate back to the boat with ease. There was a bit of current which did not cause problems. A nice dive site of quality in the Marine Park area. The south IS better diving.

The staff were attentive polite and very friendly. We got a boat briefing and dive site briefing. There was a course going on at the time which did not limit the good dives we did.

I would use them again and recommend them to anyone. 2 tanks with my own equipment and marine park fee was 89 USD including the pickup.

My only issue and this is not something they can do much about is if your resort is far away it will take a while to get there. They don't pick up by boat. Food at lunch time water and juice on-board (no coffee) and the boat is well catered for with oxygen and first aid kit etc good ladders for getting back in and space. They don't have a dive shop per-se but this is not an issue normally. Though for a course I don't know where you will study.

I would also add that you get water or juice on the boat and we had lasagne which was a real treat. The other operators dont have as nice food.

The quality of the leading was very good (Paul and Connie great hospitality humor - Paul dives with a bow tie !) finding and explaining the fish life past what I normally am used to. They are also committed to safety first and fun second.

Some small things missing for me- free or available coffee in the shop (its a decent sized hut on a beautiful beach) Also I didn't get to shower off before my lift back to resort.

NOTE: This appears to be the only dive operator offering decent value transfers from Resort. I was staying at the halcyon rex in dickenson beach and ot cost 20 USD return regular cab is over 50 ! Other dive operators use regular taxis and they told me for insurance purposes they would not pick us up, that can't be right ?

The trip exceeded my expectations. I must caution -- this is not the West End. The resort is located on a small key (cay?) that is only accessible by boat. The focus of trips here are basically – Eat, Sleep, Dive (not necessarily in that order). Partying/nightlife is not one of the purposes.

Getting There:
Convenient! Fly into Roatan (usually Saturday or Sunday from the US). Someone is there to meet you at the airport and help collect your bags. Transportation to/from the airport is included.

Accommodations:
Comfortable! There are only 12 or so rooms, each has two queen-sized beds, a flat screen TV with cable, A/C, hot private shower, and all the fresh drinking water you can consume. You can also refill your bottles with drinking water from a cooler in the main lodge. Free wi-fi is available in the rooms and lodge area.

Food:
Incredible! Three home-cooked meals, served on individual plates (no buffet). Each meal had home-made bread or tortillas and dinner included dessert (also home-made). After the third dive, fresh cookies or sweet rolls were available. Everything was fresh, wonderful, filling, and just downright DELICIOUS!

Juice and Iced Tea are provided with every meal. Alcohol and soft drinks are not included in the price (beer $2, sodas $1). The bar is an on-your-honor system. You can also bring your own alcohol or drinks.

Things that let it down are just that it doesnt have a beach though it is right on the water and has its own jetty. You can walk down to half moon bay or get a water taxi up to west bay, the best beach in the Caribbean - well a contender.

This was my first trip to a tropical paradise. We were 3 couples.
Initially we had reserved rooms at the Infinity Bay. Two days before our trip, our hotel was changed due to "unforeseen problems" and we had the choice of 2 other hotels.... we chose the Mayan Princess.

Because of these problems, we all received complimentary fruit plates and bottles of wine in our rooms.... as well as VIP bracelets giving us access at anytime to all the resorts and bars on the beach. With this luxury we were able to check out all of the resorts and we all agreed that the Mayan Princess was the better choice.

Upon arriving we had a nice welcome from the staff as a staff member handed each of us a "welcome daiquiri". We were offered assistance with our luggage and we headed straight to the beach which was located only a few steps from our room. It was GORGEOUS! The softest sands were constantly being cleaned and groomed, chairs were always well kept.

The room was nice, the bed was broken on one side, but still liveable. A nice sitting area both inside and outside. Weather was gorgeous the entire time so we spend VERY little time in our rooms.

The Dive Shop was great, very friendly service, the snorkelling right off the beach was fantastic.... we must have done it 2-3 times a day.

We met a great man with a water taxi who brought us "downtown" to go shopping, and took us to several beautiful snorkelling locations.... and after a few days he even brought us to his house on the beach to meet his family and new baby. The locals are all so friendly.

The food was alright for me, but repetative. For the friends I travelled with (who have all done all-inclusives before) the food was dull and tasteless.

My favourite aspect of this island is that when the cruise ships dock, all passengers have "their own area" on the beach. If they want to relax in front of any of the hotels, it costs 10$ a day. so our beachfront was never crowded. very relaxing time.

The nightly entertainment was ok. There was an attempt every night to keep us entertained with karaoke, small bands or a fire show.... the same fire show every other night....

Overall, we all had a great experience and are DEFINITELY returning to Roatan in the future.

Jolly dive may not be the slickest operators in the Carribean / Atlantic but from my experience "slick" usually means impersonal.
If you want to be treated like a true dive "buddy" then get yourself down to Jolly Harbour and meet the Jolly Dive team. By the end of my stay they had me feeling like I "was" one of the team. :-)

As for cost, their charges are very reasonable given the time and effort they will go to to get everyone down to the Dive Shop from anywhere on the island. I had my personal transport to and from the dive Shop driven by two people Sonya and Paul (Both of whom demonstrated ultra safe driving at all times, and believe me I know what I am talking about!! http://aditraining123.co.uk That's me by the way!!! Overall a great dive holiday spent with some great people in a great part of the world.

We had no problem pre-chartering a Cessna over to Utila. Personally, I think this is the best way to go. A van met us at the Utila landing strip, and promptly drove us to Utila Town, and the dock where the Miss U Dive boat met us.

The owners who really care, were on hand. Even though they were kept hopping, and were very busy, they did their utmost to satisfy everyone, which is a hard task indeed to be able to accomplish. John, the chef, was most accommodating and his blackened fish is to die for. His breakfast presentations were delightful. John made it a point to individually tailor meals to the clientele. Indeed, the kitchen staff was friendly as could be, and one could learn a lot about the region and its idiosyncrasies from them.

There is wonderful diving and underwater photography to be had, and the people that you meet here are truly interesting in their own right. Juca, the divemaster, is very knowledgeable and talented. Indeed, he is someone worthy of diving with again on a repeat visit. The dive boat, Miss U, is one of the best dive boats we have come across. Alas, as for diving with whale sharks, well that is really up to Mother Nature and her whims. Even if you are not a diver, there is snorkeling off the dock, walking along the waterfront, or just plain relaxing with reading material. Mark my words, you will become relaxed! And it is true; the stars are beautiful here at night.

A quick jaunt over to Pigeon Cay gave some local flavour. Utila Town is also worthwhile, and I wish we had devoted a little more time to it. Browsing these locales impresses on one that that Utila was once the haunting grounds of pirates.

Most definitely wear something, i.e. Deet, baby oil), to ward off the sand flies. However, everything else about Utopia Dive Village and Utila, overrides this nasty inconvenience. Also, the accommodations were comfortable, clean and innovative in design and décor.

So saying, if you want adventure, and to be able to dive with a wonderful divemaster, and an impressive dive boat, then this is the place. If you want delicious food prepared with thought and care, it is all here. If you want the peace of mind of caring staff doing their utmost for you, this is the place. And, if you come with an open mind, you can have a lot of fun, and isn’t that what it really boils down to?

We stayed up the beach at the Pineapple House on Treasure beach (also fantastic), and everyone that we ran into told us that Utopia was a great place to go for dinner and drinks. We decided to check it out, and I've got to say - it was a lot more than just fantastic food. I have never had the pleasure of meeting such pleasant and down to earth people in any of my travels. The level of service and hospitality here are just off the charts. From the moment we walked up their beach to inquire about dinner the following evening, Debbie invited us in to the lovely beach bar for a drink. I'd forgot my wallet at the house but that was no problem, they happily started us a tab and we joined the staff at the current group of guests/divers for a few drinks before heading back down the beach. The following evening we joined the same group and some others for dinner - the food was excellent! Great presentation, great service, and great taste. We toured around the resort - if you stay here, you will NOT be disappointed.

The resort is situated about 15 minutes from Utila by boat - there is no vehicle access which makes it very private and remote. The design of the facility is very open and airy, lots of ocean breeze and fresh air. They've put a lot of work into their beach, it's by far the nicest we've seen on Utila, nice and sandy with great hammocks and loungers and lots of shade. The water is beautiful.

We did not experience the diving, however we did have the pleasure of meeting the dive instructors and they were just fantastic. We had some drinks and dined with some of the other guests and the feedback we got from them about the resort and the diving was all the same - everything was top notch.

We felt very welcome, met great new friends, and will definitely return for the full Utopia experience (hopefully next year).

Utopia Dive Village is described as an “off the beaten path vacation retreat” and that it definitely is. Getting there was almost as much fun as the stay. I was a little nervous about having to take a “puddle jumper”, meet a van and get on a boat, but everyone was all set and waiting for me. Not once did I worry about not knowing where to go or which bus to take, etc.

The final hop of my journey was on the Miss U, which is also the dive boat we used every day. It is very well taken care of and a very nice boat. We were greeted by Roxanne on the boat, one of the owners. How many resort owners do you ever have come out and meet you to help you get to their resort? I have never had any. When we arrived we had a welcome drink and then were shown to our rooms. The rooms were spacious and very open air feeling. Very tastefully decorated. Our view was incredible as we had a large picture window that looked right out onto the water. When the sky was clear we could even see the mountains on the mainland.

There were only a total of 12 guests in the entire resort the week we were there and it felt like we owned the place. All of the staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. We ate gourmet meals every evening and the chef was very accommodating when I mentioned that I didn’t like coconut one night, he made my meal special; spicy just the way I like it.

The diving was wonderful, we did 2 boat dives every day and usually a shore dive every afternoon. The reef was right in front of the resort, so the shore was rocky, but going a few steps down to the dock took care of that problem. Tanks and our gear were left out whenever we wanted them to be and were waiting for us to do as many shore dives as we wanted. Ju-ca was very helpful and made us feel very relaxed, even though we still consider ourselves new at diving and started out a little nervous. The night dive was wonderful, we even saw an octopus. We unfortunately did not get to see any whale sharks, but from talking to others on the island, it does not sound like anyone did that week. A couple of days on our surface intervals we spent time in town and also went over to one of the cays to visit a quaint fishing village and have lunch.

The onsite owners and their staff were most accommodating and made us feel right at home from day one. The village is remote providing the perfect ‘get away from it all’ experience. Chef John’s daily culinary creations meant we feasted well for the entire week. The house reef was excellent and included sightings of turtles, barracuda and numerous juveniles. The daily morning boat dives were unhurried and the dive master, Juan Carlos and boat captain, Sydney were very helpful and a ton of fun. The Dive Bar was a great place to kick back after diving and chill. If you are looking for a laid back sort of dive vacation that is far from the maddening crowds, I highly recommend Utopia Village.

We were welcomed as we arrived just like we were long lost friends. The room was so quiet and comfortable we could hear the waves crashing on the beach (room M 4 , Monkey La La ) No phones or television but we did have wireless available in our room. The dive master , boat captain, and boat staff were helpful and kept our safety as a prime consideration. We had a great diving experience. The boat had plenty of room and equipment provided when we had difficulty with our own personal equipment.

Chef John was outstanding, by meeting our special diet needs and every meal was great. We always had more than enough to eat at every meal and muffins and fruit providided on the dive boat every day.

We will be returning soon to Utopia BUT WE WILL NOT USE MORGAN TRAVEL that was our only down side to the trip. Morgan Travel is not dependable, we were placed in a very small plane when we had booked a larger plane and were left at the airport 4 hours on arrival and over an hour and half on departure from Utila at the local airstrip nearly missing our flight to Houston. So book with Utopia Dive Village, but avoid Morgan Travel for a wonderful vacation and great diving.

The resort is beautiful, decor is lovely and rustic. Food is awesome....Chef John is a very talented man...ask him to make his chocolate cake with peanut butter icing....yum! Utopia owners and staff were very friendly, remebered all the guests names and made sure we were all well taken care of. Event the pets at Utopia are wonderful, Paco is likely the friendlist dog in Honduras.

Had a lot of fun diving, Juan Carlos, Chris and crew took great care of all us divers. We saw sea horses, ocotpus, eel garden, barracuda and lots of colourful fish and beautiful, healthy coral. I rented dive equipment and was pleased that it was good quality / in good shape. I was travelling on my own and make quick friends with the other guests. Could not ask for a nicer group of people to hang out with. Overall fantastic trip.

It does however serve some of the best coffee with free refills in the area and the breakfast is varied and local. The service is very friendly and also where you eat your breakfast IS the best location right on a nice sun filled terrace listening at the clanking scuba tanks from Native Suns and Coconut tree divers.

I am an experienced (I never say 'advanced') diver with 1000+ dives. I prefer to dive with a DM and a small group. Tylls offers exactly what I wanted/needed. I was in West End for over a month and dove about twice a week with them. They became friends and I enjoyed every dive. They took great pains to make sure dive conditions were safe and even when I was the only diver, we went diving. There are bigger dive shops in West End, but I doubt if there are any better.

I have taken one descent shot recently which I will get uploaded. The diver in silhouete is really nice as well.

K.. looks a bit odd to give all staight A's, but hear me out.
Owner Uwe dont messes around with his stuff, its good, well maintained and he as an ingeneer and instructor knows what its about. You can expect close to new regulators, same in bcd's and tanks, those 3 are for me most important. Altho i almost forgot the compressor here which is well.. do i need to repeat?
Uwe and that lovely danish girl Dorte provide next to the staff a very laid back time.. I got taken care of in a personal, friendly and almost family like way. And since ive been diving with plenty outfits in Roatan, mostly in west end but also in west bay and with some of the bigger resort, my opinion of there way of how they are operating is 3 kisses, cream and sugar on top..
Guests are always welcome in the shop, invited to come along to dinner or a drink, to be part of the ongoing scrabble, nick your neigbor (friendly version) and what not. Your not just diving, you are there guest;
I'm going back there and with 1500+ dives logged, that's a first.

The price? It's almost a joke, they will go up pretty soon im sure, so better take advantage of that cause shops like this are hard to find.

Safe diving,

Ron

The level of staff experience and dive leading varies from DM to DM (or instructor), but the professionalism and importance to safety does not. The shop is always welcoming and has an endless supply of coffee (which helps on the early mornings). The gear is well maintained and serviced regularly. The dive sites are excellent, with maps of many of them on the wall for you to see before you go. The shop owners are experienced and will always work with you to make your diving an enjoyable experience, making sure that both your program and your instructor are a good match. I looked at all the other shops before I chose to come to Tyll's. Being an instructor, I knew what to look for and I found everything and more here.

Very laid back setup, but focus on quality and safety. Love the fact that it's small and personnal. Location could be better if it were on the beach, but the extra 20 steps is still very good! Plus the Turtle across the street is close and allows for quick drinks while chatting or playing cards after a nice day diving... Looking forward to go back!

I wish they were on the waterside ! I think the shop isn't much to look at from the outside but when you are on the inside its a very laid back shop with an emphasis on safety and quality of diving. It's really friendly. Smaller groups and the full variety of diving Roatan can offer.

A great dive shop popular with the yachting brigade who harbour here on the other side of Carriacou. They were friendly and helpful, but there were no other divers so the atmosphere was a little 2 dimensional, of no fault of the dive shop of course. The quality of the diving was some of the best I have had in the caribbean and Connie was a great divemaster at finding things like rays and nurse sharks.

If you don't have your own equipment you will be shocked at the water in the gauges and air jumps of 20 bar if the fills seem low ! gulp ! The boat isn't the most comfortable always stay close to your buddy. This is Cuba and it seems this is quite the norm here.

For such a seemingly isolated area it isn't as you would expect under the surface. Though the reef is decent quality there was a lack of sea life the 5 days I dived there. In fact I wouldn't recommend more.

The resort has good rooms and a few facilities but hopefully there will be a few folks around to chat to .There is no outside of the resort, except a long tarmac road and no transport. So you are stuck there. Get a deal which is full board to save money though as you cant choose where you eat or at least make sure to get dinner and breakfast board at the restaurant.

But if you want an original location to get away from it all then here could be a good option especially if you have your own dive equipment. Don't miss the province of Pinar Del Rio and Vinales !
