Get the Feel Good Factor on International Cleanup Day 20 September 2008
Because it's one of the easiest and most fun ways to get involved, International Cleanup Day’s feel good factor can’t be matched. Project AWARE is calling on divers, snorkelers and water enthusiasts to join this year’s cleanup. Just search the online list of coordinators to find an event near you and jump in.
One-Third Reef Building Corals Worldwide Face Extinction
Project AWARE Foundation joined more than 3000 leading coral experts and partners at the International Coral Reef Symposium (ICRS) this July. A study on the current global status of coral reefs stated that if rising sea temperatures continue to cause coral bleaching and disease, many reefs may be headed for extinction. Together with Australia’s University of Queensland, Project AWARE presented global opportunities for individuals to become involved in coral monitoring through the CoralWatch program.
Shark Conservation Act of 2008
In July the United States House of Representatives passed the Shark Conservation Act of 2008 – a bill aimed at combating shark finning – or the practice of removing shark fins and discarding the body at sea. If the bill is signed into law it would prohibit the removal of shark fins at sea, closing enforcement loopholes and encouraging the adoption of other international conservation programs.
