About

The Belize portion of the MESOAMERICAN BARRIER REEF SYSTEM accounts for approximately a third with a Belize length of 190 miles approx. The Great Mayan Reef (common name for the mesoamerican whole reef) starts at the tip of the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico travels down along the edge of belize where it gets further away the further south you go. For divers this means longer boat trips the further south you base yourself. The Great Maya Reef continues down meets Guatemala and turns into Honduras and ends at the bay island in Honduras. The bay islands being Guanaja, Utila and Roatan.
